Project COR

Synopsis:
Counter Organic Revolution, or COR, is a Total Conversion for UT2004. It is a fast-paced, multiplayer-only game based on the premise of shape-changing machines, or Cybernetic-Morphing Robots. Assuming the role of a unique CMR, players will find themselves caught in the middle of a mechanical revolution. The COR faction, which once served as mankind’s resource-mining slaves, have cut off all contact with their human rulers. Now, they are being invaded by an army of superior CMRs, piloted by the GHC’s most loyal and skilled members of their elite military. The Great Human Council will stop at nothing to thwart the COR’s uprising.

Gameplay in COR is extremely team oriented, and includes a capture the flag mode, team deathmatch mode, and the revolutionary Linear Multiplayer Progression mode (story mode). Players will learn to utilize both vehicle and humanoid forms of their CMR, while also taking advantage of their teammate’s capabilities. For example, the smaller in stature, unshielded emergency-shell CMR can sneak into an enemy fortress through the ventilation system. Then, he can recover the enemy flag and bring it back to his base by catching a ride on a friendly aircraft. This style of team-oriented gameplay is the main focus of COR.

Every aspect of the game has a slight anime-style undertone. Character designs, animations, sounds, and personalities will all be lightly based on traditional robot-style anime. Don’t expect COR to be the next Mech Warrior or Halo, though; COR is a quick and feverishly intense game that is every bit as dynamic as the transforming CMRs themselves. COR version 1.0 will be released on Friday, June 24th, 2005, when it will be made available for free download off the COR site. Until then, feel free to drop by the forums to discuss us any suggestions or ideas you may have for the game. If you’re interested in joining the project, please visit our recruitment area.

   Project Info

What kind of game is COR?
COR is a fast-paced, multiplayer only FPS – a total conversion mod for Unreal 2004. The game is centered on the concept of a cooperative team experience. Visually, COR is a futuristic game of anime robot combat, where each character can realistically transform into a vehicle with a unique ability.

Does it cost anything to play?
COR itself is free, and we plan to keep it that way. In order to play, you will need to own or purchase a copy of Unreal Tournament 2004, however.

Does COR have Dev support - will it get regular updates?
Yes, there are regular updates and they will continue as long as COR has a player community. These updates are currently not on a schedule, but we'll keep you informed about them!

What are the two factions? What's the difference?
One faction is the mod’s namesake: the Counter Organic Revolution is a group of robots rebelling against their human creators. The Great Human Council (GHC) represents the military-run nation, which originally created the COR robots. The GHC’s power centers around artillery, while the strength of the COR faction resides in their utilitarian resourcefulness.

What about COR's weapons and combat?
All of the weapons in COR are energy-based, so traditional ammunition is not required. However, firing a weapon adds to your total heat, and overheating causes death. Many of our weapons will mirror those common in other FPS games. Because many characters’ vehicle forms have their own artillery, COR’s combat is dynamic.

How does COR’s story integrate into the multiplayer style?
Since COR is faction based, the story is deeply rooted in its characters and opposing sides. In addition to this, COR’s levels accommodate the story directly.

How many weapons, characters and levels are there? Are more planned?
Currently, there are 7 weapons and 6 Cyber-Morphing Robots (CMR's) - 3 per faction. We plan to release at least 3 more weapons and 2 more CMR's. There are a total of 9 maps, but many of them will be updated quite a bit, and we will certainly release more.

How does the Load-out area work?
A typical map has at least 4 load-out pads, and this varies based on the size and gameplay type. The load-out pad allows players to change their entire profile – CMR class and stored weaponry.

What is the world setting for the maps?
COR takes place on Tantalus IX, a barren and unstable planet, which, while void of life, is rich with resources. Red-rock canyons, large caverns, seas of methane and active volcanoes are just a hint of the Tantalus terrain. Each map will have a different story element to it, and gameplay objectives will vary from map to map to emphasize this.

How do vehicles work?
In COR, every character has its own vehicle form, available at the push of the transform key. For this reason, there are no freestanding vehicles in the mod.

How did you implement the transforms?
They’re cool, aren’t they? We achieved the realistic transforms by creating three models of each character (Vehicle, Humanoid, and Transition), all optimized and rigged for their specific purposes. When a player transforms in game, the three completely different models swap seamlessly.

What is the eject feature?
Each CMR (Cyber-Morphing robot, or character) is piloted by either a smaller robot (emergency-shell) or a human. When the player ejects, their small size will allow them to reach new areas, and also “spider,” or climb walls and even other CMRs! But, be warned; e-shells are handicapped due to their decreased speed, shielding, and firepower.

What is Linear Multiplayer Progression?
Linear Multiplayer Progression (LMP) pairs an evolving story line with multiplayer action. The outcome of a map determines which map is played next, and how the story develops. This will continue until one faction wins the whole set and the story reaches a conclusion.

Can you explain the heat system?
The heat system is our version of an ammunition system. When your heat gauge (located in the upper lefthand corner) fills, your weapons will steam and you won't be able to fire. More importantly, your hull will be vulnerable and you'll take damage from enemy fire.

Is Hellfire working as intended?
This CMR is tricky to fly at first, but after a little practice, anyone can master flying Hellfire! She is quite powerful in vehicle form, hence the difficulty - and the 100% crash damage.
